I am in high school right now, and I just got my acceptance letter to Vangared (the technical school in my area, were I will go into the Carpentry program), but I don’t know were I should go from there. Should I be doing anything else right now to prep myself for the real world. I want to learn how to both design and build houses. I want to build houses for the rich so that I will have a lot of money to go toward the other houses I plan to build. My main goal is to build houses for the not so rich people so that they can rent or even buy them. So that these people will have homes to call their own. I have been down the semi-poor road and it ain’t fun. That is why I refuse to build duplexes or apartents, cuz they aren’t as hommie, and they aren’t respected nearlty as much.

Sounds like you need to take some Architecture classes as well, because designing houses is done by architects, not carpenters. Better to be an architect and volunteer at Habitat For Humanity on weekends to satisfy your carpentry craving.
I applaud your convictions to make a difference in this world, however I do have a couple of thoughts for you to ponder. A carpenter is a person who knows how to physically build a house, but more importantly, one needs to know how to design a house. Carpenters are a dime a dozen. Architects are the true visionaries of buildings. Architectural firms hire contractors who in turn hire carpenters to carry out the work for them. It sounds to me that you’re looking more at being an architect. Look into it some more and I wish you the best of luck. If you have any more questions on this topic, feel free to e-mail me at.
You want to become carpenter but your aim is something else. You should opt for some Architectural course, with the help of which you would be able to design elegant and costly houses for the rich as well as economically cheaper houses for the poor. That will be the real source of your wish-fulfillment.
First thing you should do after trade school is go to work for a large company in industrial building. This will let you apply things you learn and also learn tricks of the trade. They will teach you how to work smarter not harder. This will also be good pay so you can save while you learn. After some time you may want to go and apply for your own Contractors License. This will allow you to work for yourself and legally build these houses for low income families like you want.
Contact the local “Union for Carpenters” in your area for employment and paid training. Also, stop by a construction site and speak to the builder who is developing the area.
Sounds like you want to be a “License Builder” than a carpenter.
Good luck to your endeavors!
Success To All,
