Modifying a CV Sample

by Eudora Stridewell on July 11, 2009

You may already know that the best place to start the creating of your own CV is through the use of a CV sample. You may also already know there are numerous sources available for finding such a sample including the Internet and career centers. However, what you may not know is how to go about the process of modifying one of these samples to suit your own needs. Knowing what to use from a good CV Sample is the key.

This article will provide some practical advice on how to do this. Although it may sound like overly simplistic advice, you should start adapting the CV sample by changing the name and contact information. It may sound obvious but you would be surprised with the number of people who forget this simple step. You can still use the size, font and location of the contact information in the sample but you should check this information to make sure it is presented accurately so the potential employer can reach you to request an interview or make a job offer.

After updating the contact information it is time to begin adapting the objective portion of the CV. The objective is usually the first item listed below the contact information and is used to explain the type of job you are seeking. It is also your first opportunity to impress the prospective employer. The CV sample you are using, may give you a head start in writing an objective but you should make sure the changes you make really help you to stand out. Typically your CV will then list your skills and previous work example. The sample you are using will show you how to format this information but you should make sure it includes your actual work history.

Through using a sample, you will see which types of skills and experiences you should highlight. In this section of the CV, you want to be sure to make sure the information accurately represents your work history. The last thing you should do when adapting a CV sample is to examine the remaining sections of the CV to make sure the information listed in them is correct.
